A good friend of mine arranged a belated surprise birthday for me in NYC recently that led me to discovering a little gem of a Jamaican restaurant/dance hall, hot spot called Miss Lily’s & Melvin’s Juice Box. Located in the South Village, it doesn’t look like much from the outside but we went on a particularly rainy Thursday night and we definitely felt like we’d been transported to the Caribbean inside. I ate the best jerk chicken and corn on the cob we’ve EVER eaten (outside of Jamaica obviously) which we washed down with cocktails that went by the name of Dutty Wine, Ting-A-Ling, Pressure Drop, Hotstepper and Tempted To Touch. Kanye West was spotted there the night after us celebrating his birthday alongside Jay Z and Beyonce so it must be good. If you are ever in town then check out Miss Lily’s. They even turn up the tunes and turn it into a party! If in doubt, skank out!
Craig Redman and Karl Maier, make up the art collective Craig & Karl. Craig lives in New York and Karl lives in London and they work together daily to produce bold work that is filled with simple messages and executed in a thoughtful, often humorous way. They specialize in illustration and installation and their work is recognisable due to their colourful, pop art based works that have been seen in exhibitions worldwide. They are contributors to British Vogue’s Culture Edit and do their monthly take on a current popular event. They did their take on Bowie in line with the V&A’s Bowie retrospective, as well as taking on an illustration of the Queen of Pop music, Beyonce referencing her Mrs Carter Show as seen here. Not only do I like them because they run on my time zones, I like the idea of them collaborating from different different sides of the Atlantic, which means they can share their creative genius-ness with a wider audience. Smart thinking Craig & Karl!
I’ve seen every episode of Sex and The City that was ever made and the one song that always reminds me of it is Nick Glider’s Hot Child in The City. I’m currently living in NYC and it came on on a very HOT day in New York City by the pool at Soho House. It’s been very appropriately stuck in my head ever since.
Here are the first few pairs of sunglasses from my sparkle-tastic collection Ooh La Lune. I’ve taken original vintage frames and customised them with glitter and trust me this glitter will not be falling off! If you want a pair they are £12, just drop me a line on the contact form below. They are the bestest most spangley festival accessory around.
